3 Things You Need to Know About the Abortion Pill

When faced with an unplanned pregnancy some women feel like abortion is the only option. If you are considering an abortion, you may have some questions about the abortion pill. Abortion is a medical procedure and can be either surgical or non-surgical. Non-surgical abortion is known as the abortion pill (also referred to as mifeprex, TM mifepristone, or RU-46) and utilizes two drugs to end an early pregnancy. Since abortion is a medical procedure, you owe it to yourself to anwer all of your questions and gather accuate information.

1. When can you use the abortion pill? 

The abortion pill is FDA approved for use in women up to 10 weeks (70 days) following their last menstrual period. 

2. What does the abortion pill process look like?

Day one: You will go to your abortion provider and take the first drug mifepristone. Mifepristone stops the hormone progesterone which is required for continuing a pregnancy. 

Day two or three: You will take misoprostol tablets which will cause cramping and eventually lead to the expulsion of the fetus. These tables can be taken at home or at the clinic office. Cramping and bleeding can last one to two weeks and could be severe. 

Day seven to fourteen: Following the initial mifepristone pill on day one, you will follow up in one to two weeks with your provider to ensure the abortion is complete and to check for any complications which may have occured. 

3. What are common side effects?

Common potential side effects for the abortion pill include:

  • Severe cramping

  • Abdominal pain 

  • Fever and chills

  • Bleeding 

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea
